Yutaka Furuta, MD is a PGY-5 Medical Biochemical Genetics Fellow at Emory University and a member of the SIMD Planning Committee. He received his MD from Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan, and completed his Medical Genetics Residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. During his residency at Vanderbilt, his research focused primarily on inherited metabolic diseases in collaboration with the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN). His current research involves newborn screening implementation to improve diagnostic rate and reduce sex-related inequalities. He is also one of the selected trainees in the Rare Disease Research Scholars Program 2025-2026, funded by the NIH under Rare Diseases Research R25 Curriculum Grant.
